A new study in the American Journal Of Psychiatry (Volume 171, Issue 6, June 2014) shows that incorporating the web-based educational intervention in the treatment of drug abuse can not only help people stop using drugs, but can also keep them in treatment longer. TES is a web-based version of the Community Reinforcement Approach plus Contingency Management, a packaged approach with demonstrated efficacy.  The National Institute on Drug Abuse (NIDA), part of the NIH, funded this study. TES consists of 62 interactive modules that teach patients how to achieve and maintain abstinence from drug use and includes prize-based motivational incentives to encourage adherence to treatment.  Patients given TES were less likely to drop out of treatment than those in the control group.  Also, the web-based intervention helped patients stay abstinent from drug use, even those who were not abstinent at the beginning of the study.  With such findings, web-based interventions ...

National Inventory of the Collateral Consequences of Conviction Reveals Hidden Pitfalls of Criminal Convictions:   Persons convicted of crime are subject to a wide variety of legal and regulatory sanctions and restrictions in addition to the sentence imposed by the court. These so- called “collateral consequences” of conviction have been ebacted without coordiantion between state and federal codes. Requirements for the 3-month AB541 First Offense DUI Class in California What are the class requirements for a first offense DUI in California? If you are taking a class in person, you will have to complete: 18 hours of group therapy 12 hours of alcohol and drug education 8 self help meetings such as AA or SMART recovery 1.5 hours of individual counseling (10-15 minutes each). If you live outside of  California, and have been approved for an online class by your judge, you can complete the 32 hour AB541 online DUI class at Tom Wilson Counseling to meet all of the Drinking Driver Program class requirements.

Tom Wilson Counseling Center  receives many phone calls asking whether they can take an online DUI class to comply with court requirements for a DUI in California. The answer is,  it depends. Scenario #1 : You are a resident of  California and have been convicted of a first-time DUI offense in California. Your license is suspended by the CA DMV. In order to remove the license suspension, the DMV requires you to complete the  AB541 3-month DUI class . The DMV will not accept completion of a DUI class from another state, whether done in person or online. The class must be taken at a program approved by the county where the DUI occurred. Recent budget cuts in the California court system have resulted in closed courts, fewer staff and many delays in civil cases, but also in criminal cases such as DUI and drug arrest trials and hearings. An LA Times article states that the California courts have lost about 65% of their state support in the last 5 years and affects from those cuts are continuing to increase. These cuts are causing delays in hearings and trials, causing records to go unprocessed for many months, and reducing the number of services at public windows.
